DPS Sharjah triumphed on the 13th of April 2017, emerging as the winners, bagging the First Place in the Blue Used Cooking Oil Collection Campaign which ran from November 2016 to April 2017, inviting students, teachers and the entire school fraternity to wholeheartedly take part in the campaign, by bringing the used cooking oil that they have used twice in plastic bottles and putting it in the Blue bins in the vicinity of the
Eco-Park.
The awards ceremony for the same, organized by the Blue Company was held on 13th April at the Al Serkal Cultural Foundation, Bastakia, Dubai. The aesthetic setting, coupled with environmental enthusiasm was a perfect terrarium to absorb ideas as well, a fact which was proved when every participating school gave a presentation regarding their oil collection journey. DPS Sharjah’s presentation was spearheaded by Rohan Kapur and Hafsah Areen of Grade 12, assisted by Saad Qadeer, also of Grade 12. The presentation was titled, ‘From Roots to Results’ and was portrayed using the Prezi software.
The oil that was given to the Blue Co. by every school, according to the initiator of the campaign, Ms. Mathilde, has all been converted into
Bio-Diesel, which will help to divert carbon emissions from the air and reduce air pollution and tackle climate change. The Environment In-Charge, Ms. Anjum Hasan along with the Students of the Environment Council Disha Kalra,Chirag Thakur,Anshita Jain and Saad Qadeer and teachers of the Environmental council,Ms.Talat Zubair,Ms.Priyanka Kohli ,Ms.Hemlata Upreiti and Ms. Rajini Mahajan was the backbone of the entire campaign, consistently motivating the students through different media to step forward and recycle.
DPS Sharjah left all the other schools far behind, submitting a total of 110 litres of cooking oil, out of the grand total of 167 that was collected by the campaign and our efforts were duly recognized during the results announcement.
The highest collectors from the students were:
Gouri Saraswathy-Grade 7(now 8)- Senior wing highest contributor(15 litres)
Akshaya –Grade 5-(now 6) Primary Wing Highest contributor!(4 litres)
Diya Thakur-Grade 8(now 9) (10 litres)
All the students will be felicitated in the assembly.
