DPS MUN -2007 INAUGURATED
         

The DPSMUN  2007, Model United Nations Conference, was officially inaugurated in a solemn ceremony on 9th November 2007 at the new auditorum. His Excellency Mr. Dileep Nair, Consul General of Singapore, Mr. Batavia, Director DPS Sharjah, Mr. C.N Krishna, Director I.A.H.V and Mr Jamal Al Falasi, UN Youth Representative graced this function with their august presence. The event got off to a great start with an enlightening speech by Mr. C.N Krishna , Director, International Association for Human Values who spoke regarding the widespread response to the recent 'Stand Up Against Poverty' Campaign in schools, colleges, large corporations and labour camps. The entire gathering of student delegates, teacher advisors, dignitaries and guests solemnly pledged to eliminate poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals. The melodious rendition of the song 'Make Me a Channel of Your Peace' set the atmosphere for the conference.

 
         

The Principal of the school Mrs. Abha Sahgal spoke about how the Global Classrooms project had helped students understand global dynamics and created a platform for the emergence of future leaders. She hoped the conference would create a spirit of camaraderie and forge long-lasting friendships.

DPS MUN 2007 DPS RK PURAM BEST DELEGATION
                   
Delhi Public School R.K Puram, New Delhi has clinched the DPS MUN 2007 rolling trophy for the best delegation representing the United States of America followed by Our Own English High School, Sharjah taking the runner up trophy as Japanese delegates after the two day long diplomatic deliberation and exemplary display of debating skills by 300 delegates from 20 schools from the Middle East and India at the 4th DPS Model United Nations 2007 organized by DPS Sharjah from November 9 and 10, 2007.

                   
The valedictory ceremony was graced by the presence of His Excellency Mr. Venu Rajamony, Consul General Of India and Mr. Khaled Alloush UN Resident Coordinator UNDP, UAE who jointly awarded the winners their trophies and certificates.

 “Two days of debate, frenzied arguments, laughter and solid moments have come to an end”, said our Head Boy Akshay Wahi during the glittering closing and valedictory ceremony of the MUN07.

 

The event got off to a good start with a short address by the Chair of the Security Council, Aradhya Malhotra.

                   

                   

The Consul General of India gave a very enlightening speech in which he appreciated the MUN as a great way for the youth to learn to forge a consensus among large groups of very different people with very different ideas. He also stated his pride in seeing the student delegates in action and called their performance and confidence truly outstanding. He also quoted former Secretary General of the U.N, Mr. Kofi Annan saying that in today’s world “problems don’t have passports” and that the MUN is a wonderful opportunity for exposure to global issues and the world’s political process at a young age. He then opened the floor to questions from the audience and the students took it upon themselves to question him in the most important issues at hand. Topics varying from the experiences and challenges of working as a foreign diplomat, to the validity of the U.N, to worker’s and women’s rights were discussed. The Consul General was also questioned time and again regarding the Indian education system here in the UAE which often gained thunderous applause. He finally left us with the message that we must carry the Indian message with us everywhere we go and that we should try to excel in whatever we do in life.
                   

                   

Our Guest of Honor Dr. Khalid also spoke and shed light on the lesser-known development side of the U.N. He said that while the U.N was established to maintain peace and security, in today’s world these are impossible goals to achieve without development of all nations. He described the issues being faced by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) such as poverty, environment issues, gender equality and HIV-AIDS. He hoped that this MUN would help students to understand the flaws in the UN and the need to develop its organizations to make the world a better place.
                   

   

                   

After the valedictory function the Head Boy, Akshay Wahi gave us a full overview of the events of the past two days and stated that all the students had grown into global citizens.

Finally, The Secretary General of DPSMUN07, Ashutosh Dhar, thanked the entire conference staff for making the event possible in his closing speech. He commented that he admired the fact that all debates had resulted in unanimous decisions and even crisis situations were handled extremely well.

 

He officially closed the session of the MUN with the words, “In the same spirit of togetherness and unity that the session was opened yesterday, I now declare this session of the DPSMUN07 closed.”
